Controversy

SRW:J has achieved a degree of notoriety amongst fans of the series. It was first announced only weeks following the release of the 3rd Super Robot Wars Alpha: To the End of the Galaxy for the PlayStation 2. It lacks numerous traditional mainstays of the series, featuring (as an example) only two titles from the Mobile Suit Gundam metaseries (the fewest yet used in a SRW game excluding SRW: NEO), excluding the prolific Universal Century timeline that had contributed titles to all previous SRW games. Most noticeably, Getter Robo was absent entirely.

Apart from the removal of some of the traditional series, it introduced Tekkaman Blade. While only one unit in this particular series is actually a robot, the main character and certain enemy units are not. Instead, these units are given abilities in the form of battle armors, not machines or robots. This is another first in the franchise, as battle armors have not appeared in prior titles.

SRW:J's original characters finally made their debut in the Original Series in the titled SRW game called Moon Dwellers. Unique amongst this is that Moon Dwellers is the first SRW game to have full English text since Original Generation 2 on the Game Boy Advance.
