Gameplay

Gameplay in Sparks of Hope is largely similar to that of Kingdom Battle. Players are able to build out their roster of characters from, Rabbid Peach, Rabbid Luigi, and Rabbid Mario, along with new characters Edge, Rabbid Rosalina, and Bowser (with the Rabbids being fully voiced for the first time).[2] Players are also tasked with rescuing the Sparks throughout the galaxy, who provide distinct powers that will help the player in battle.[3]

Unlike the first game, level designs are less linear, and the turn-based tactical combat features a new system that disregards the first game's grid-based layout. This new combat has been compared to that of games such as Divinity: Original Sin.[4][5] Also featured are enemy encounters outside of turn-based combat. Mario can now be replaced by a different character. Lead designer Xavier Manzanares speaking about the new combat stated: "You can move in this area of movement the way you want; you can dash a Bob-omb, then you have it in your hand. You can move around as you want, but then it's going to explode. So, you have a few seconds to react, which is completely different from what we had in the past. And so, it brings this real-time element to the mix".[4]

Plot

Sometime after Kingdom Battle, Mario, Luigi, and Princess Peach are enjoying peace in the Mushroom Kingdom alongside the Rabbids, including their counterparts. Then suddenly, Sparks fall from the sky. After greeting the Sparks, a giant manta ray arrives and covers everything in a dark substance called Darkmess. During the scuffle, Rabbid Peach tries to take a selfie with the manta, but it absorbs her, so Mario jumps into it himself to rescue her. Inside the manta, he is transported to another dimension inside the Darkmess and tries to save Rabbid Peach alongside Beep-0 and a Spark named Starburst. After rescuing Rabbid Peach and defeating enemies, a malevolent entity named Cursa arrives and mind-controls some Goombas on the manta. After the heroes beat the Goombas, Cursa tries to kill them herself, but they are saved by the arrival of their allies who rescue them and escape in a spaceship called the WM ARC (Washing Machine Advanced Rabbid Carrier). Inside the ship, Beep-0 introduces the crew to the ship’s A.I., JEANIE (Jovial Electronic Artificial Neuronic Intelligent Elite), who explains the situation of their problem. Jeanie explains the DNA of the Sparks, and how Cursa plans to rule the galaxy with Darkmess. The gang is worried about Rosalina and wonders what happened to her. To stop the Darkmess and reach Cursa, they must travel to Cursa’s stronghold with enough Purified Darkmess crystals. Meanwhile, Cursa is plotting to steal the energy of the Sparks by having Spark Hunters: Midnite, Bedrock, and Daphne, find and capture them.

During their adventures on five different planets (Beacon Beach, Pristine Peaks, Palette Prime, Terra Flora, and Barrendale Mesa), the heroes meet many new allies on their quest to save the galaxy: Edge, a cool, independent, sword-wielding Rabbid who seeks to save the Sparks and the galaxy; Rabbid Rosalina, a gloomy but intelligent Rabbid who is looking for Rosalina (whom she idolizes), and finally Bowser: Mario’s archenemy whose army is under Cursa's control. After defeating Midnite, Bedrock, Daphne, and other foes, Cursa arrives and tries to kill the heroes once again, but a burst of light comes out of Cursa, revealing Rosalina herself, whose body is possessed by Cursa. She manages to save the heroes by opening a portal back to the real world and giving them a crystal before Cursa regains control of her. Through the crystal, the heroes learn that Cursa was originally a fragment of the Megabug from before that survived, drifted into space, gained stellar debris, mutated, and eventually gained sentience. Desiring to absorb the energy of the galaxy, Cursa went to Rosalina’s Comet Observatory undetected after sensing the joy of Lumas playing with the Rabbids. They were having fun when Cursa struck, but fortunately, Rosalina manages to hold off Cursa. But during the fight, a huge wave of energy is emitted, and it causes the Lumas and Rabbids to be blasted away while merging them in the process, thus making the Sparks. However, Cursa manages to take control of Rosalina, learned how to create Darkmess, and created an army of corrupted Rabbids from the Darkmess as well as taking control of Bowser’s minions, having them led by the Spark Hunters. Now more determined, the heroes journey to Cursa’s stronghold to stop her and free Rosalina.

After reaching the stronghold and breaking through its shield with a warden's Shield Buster, showing the Observatory, they face Darkmess versions of Bowser and Edge. After defeating them, Edge reveals to the group that she too was also created by Cursa, as the leader of the Spark Hunters, but she betrayed Cursa after gaining enough free will to recognize the evil inside. She also tried to turn her Spark Hunters towards the light, but instead, they turned on her and remained loyal to Cursa. With no other choice, she fled and tried to rescue as many Sparks as she can. She didn’t want to say it to them because she knew they wouldn’t have a reason to believe her. The heroes disagree and say they have plenty of reasons to believe in her since they are family and that means they don’t have to keep secrets from each other. With that speech, the heroes arrive and face Cursa. After Cursa is defeated in Phase 2, she releases all of the Sparks she has consumed while also freeing Rosalina in the process. But Cursa isn't finished yet; instead, she continues to attack the heroes in her final form. Fortunately, in Phase 3, Rosalina protects them and manages to weaken Cursa just long enough for her, the Sparks, and the heroes to use their final attacks against Cursa, killing her.

After the battle, the heroes return to the Mushroom Kingdom where Rosalina congratulates them for not only their effort in saving the galaxy, but also in restoring the Sparks's energy consumed by Cursa. Here, Rosalina offers Rabbid Rosalina a chance to stay with her in the Observatory, but she declines, saying that she already has a family here. When Rosalina turns to Edge, she reacts by saying how her “old pals” will probably find a new line of work now that Cursa is gone. Edge too decides to stay with her friends. With that, Rosalina decided to take her leave, but not before congratulating Mario for his many qualities as well as congratulating Bowser for seeing what can be accomplished with teamwork. Rabbid Mario, Rabbid Luigi, and Rabbid Peach then try to play with Bowser, but Mario, knowing this will infuriate him, tries to stop them, but Bowser blasts fire to knock them off, reigniting old rivalries. Meanwhile, in a post-credit scene, Beep-0 talks with Jeanie, who has now developed emotions.[6]

Development

Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope was announced at E3 2021 and released on October 20, 2022.[7][8] The game was a co-op development by Ubisoft Paris and Ubisoft Milan, with additional work by Ubisoft Pune, Ubisoft Chengdu and Ubisoft Montpellier. Creative director Davide Soliani stated that the development team had viewed the game as a spiritual successor to the first, and as a different take on the tactical genre in part due to the game having expanded beyond the Mushroom Kingdom to focus on a range of galactic locations.[5] Its soundtrack was written by Grant Kirkhope (who composed the soundtrack for the first game), Gareth Coker (who composed the soundtrack for Ubisoft's Immortals Fenyx Rising), and Yoko Shimomura (who previously composed for the Mario & Luigi series).[9]

The game is set to receive three downloadable content expansions via a season pass in 2023, including one featuring Rayman as a playable character.[10]

These three expansions, according to a Twitter post, include the Tower of Doooom (spelled with four "o"s), a post-game adventure featuring a new, mysterious villain in an enchanted forest-like planet, and the said Rayman adventure. The first will be released in early 2023, the second in mid 2023, and the third in late 2023.

Reception
