Après le rachat de la licence (auparavant détenue par Take-Two) par Kalypso Media[2], c'est Haemimont Games[3] qui est chargé du développement.

La sortie PC, prévue initialement début , a finalement lieu le [4]. La sortie sur Xbox 360 a lieu quant à elle le [4] et non début 2010 comme prévu.

Cette nouvelle mouture reprend les concepts des versions précédentes mais comporte désormais un moteur graphique 3D.

Tropico 3 ist ein Wirtschaftssimulation und der dritte Teil der Tropico-Reihe. Das Spiel stellt damit den Nachfolger des 2003 erschienenen Spiels Tropico 2: Die Pirateninsel dar. Tropico 3 erschien am 24. September 2009 für Windows, eine Xbox-360-Version wurde knapp einen Monat später veröffentlicht. Diese Konsolenversionen stellt ein Novum in der Serie dar, die bisher nur für Windows und Macintosh erschien. Im Gegensatz zu den beiden Vorgängern wurde das Spiel nicht mehr von Take 2, sondern von Kalypso Media, die zuvor die Namensrechte an der Serie gekauft hatten, veröffentlicht. Entwickelt wurde das Spiel vom bulgarischen Team Haemimont Games. Im November 2008 war es erstmals angekündigt worden.

Tropico 3 is a video game developed by Haemimont Games and published by Kalypso Media. Like the previous games in the series, Tropico 3 is a construction and management simulation as well as a political simulation game, with emphasis on city building. As a thematic sequel to Tropico (unlike the pirate-themed sequel, Tropico 2), the game attempts to return to the roots of the series, which puts the player into the shoes of "El Presidente" – a ruler governing over an island banana republic.
