Los personajes a manejar son los mismos que en Super Star Wars, a diferencia del primer juego, los personajes cuentan con nuevas habilidades; al jugar con Luke Skywalker, tú tienes la opción de cambiar ya sea del sable de luz a la pistola. Han Solo cuenta con la habilidad de lanzar granadas, y Chewbacca cuenta con la habilidad de girar.
El juego, al ser muy difícil, cuenta con la opción de contraseña, para continuar en el nivel en que el jugador se haya quedado.

Super Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back is a 1993 action video game developed by LucasArts and Sculptured Software and published by JVC Musical Industries for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It is based on the 1980 film The Empire Strikes Back. It is the sequel to Super Star Wars. The game was followed by a sequel, Super Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. Unlike its predecessor, Nintendo wasn’t involved in its publishing. The game was re-released on the Wii's Virtual Console in North America on August 24, 2009[2] and in the PAL regions on October 2, 2009, alongside the other games in the Super Star Wars series.- [es] Super Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
