During the ZX Spectrum Next crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter in 2017, a new stretch goal was set by The Oliver Twins committing them to design a new Dizzy game if the funds reached its £500,000 target. After the stretch goal are met, they teamed up with the team behind the remake of Crystal Kingdom Dizzy to start developing the game.[3] This is a completely free fan-made project, and the team only works on it during their free time. After over three and a half years in development, the game is finally released for free on its official website.[4][5]
Initially, there had been plans to release an enhanced version of this game for the ZX Spectrum Next, taking advantage of the machine’s graphical abilities. Unfortunately, the plan was cancelled due to some of the team members receiving some petty abuse from ZX Spectrum Next fans over the way Wonderful Dizzy was released.[6]
As a fierce wind approaches, Dizzy and his pet fluffle, Pogie take shelter inside their house. The cyclone ripped their house from the ground and taking them soaring up into the sky. Dizzy‘s house lands on The Wicked Witch of the East, one of the four witches that rule the magical land of Oz where he ends up. The Wicked Witch of the West is enraged and kidnaps Pogie, in revenge for squashing her sister.
Now, Dizzy must rescue Pogie and find a way home. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz in the Emerald City can probably help with that. Along the way, Dizzy will meet characters whom seem oddly familiar such as the brainless Scarecrow, the heartless Tin Woodman, the Cowardly Lion and many other characters who all need his help.[7]
Wonderful Dizzy received generally positive reviews from most retro game reviewers.
