SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake is an upcoming platform game based on the Nickelodeon animated series SpongeBob SquarePants. Developed by Purple Lamp Studios, which had previously developed the title SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated (2020), it will be published by THQ Nordic. It is scheduled for release on Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in 2023.

Gameplay


The Cosmic Shake is a 3D platformer.[1] As SpongeBob, the player navigates through several distinctly themed worlds, known as ''Wishworlds" within the game, with the aid of Patrick, who has been transformed into a balloon.[2][3]


Development


The Cosmic Shake is being developed by Purple Lamp Studios, who had previously developed the title SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated (2020).[4] Conceptualized as a spiritual sequel to Rehydrated, the project was greenlit following the commercial success of that game. While Battle For Bikini Bottom had three playable characters: SpongeBob, Patrick and Sandy, each with one or more special abilities, Purple Lamp decided to have only one playable character in SpongeBob, who has multiple special abilities in The Cosmic Shake. Unlockable costumes have been made a core focus of the game.[5]

THQ Nordic first announced the game on September 17, 2021, as a part of its tenth-anniversary showcase.[6][7] THQ Nordic unveiled a new trailer featuring gameplay at the end of their games showcase on August 12, 2022.[8] A playable demo of the game was presented at Gamescom 2022.[9] On September 13, 2022, during a Nintendo Direct presentation, it was revealed that the game would release in 2023.[10][11]
