Goddess of Victory: Nikke sets in a post-apocalyptic future where the world was taken over by unknown creatures. The story follows the Nikke who are artificial soldiers commanded to retake the planet.

Gameplay

Goddess of Victory: Nikke is a role-playing video game in which players control one of up to five interchangeable characters (Nikkes). A third-person shooter, players can aim towards the enemies on a battlefield that is rendered in 2D anime-style graphics.[4] Reloading occurs automatically when a character is not shooting or runs out of ammunition.[5][6] Each character carries their own weapon and has three unique combat skills: two General skills and one Burst skill. Burst skills require users to accumulate enough cost, amassable by damaging targets.[7] If the Burst skill is activated three times, the attack strength of all allies maximizes.[8][9] New characters are obtainable via a gacha game system, which costs in-game currency—obtainable by playing the game or through microtransactions—to use.[10] The game features a cooperative multiplayer and player versus player mode of up to five players per world.[6][11]

Story

Setting

Goddess of Victory: Nikke takes place in a post-apocalyptic far future where the Earth was unexpectedly attacked by extraterrestrial mechanical creatures called the Rapture who destroyed everything on the surface, forcing the remaining humans to take refuge underground and establish the Ark, a city and research facility.[12] Decades later,[6] several manufacturers worked on building humanoid soldiers called the Nikke to be used as a weapon to defeat the Raptures and restore humanity on the surface.[13]

Development and release

Nikke was developed by South Korean-based company Shift Up working with publisher Level Infinite.[11] Development began in 2018 with an internal planning competition for a prototype of the game.[1] It was originally planned to be played from a first-person perspective but was later changed to incorporate battle poses inspired by the Gears of War series.[14] Shift Up's CEO Kim Hyung-tae, who was responsible for the production and illustrations, wanted the game to be playable with one hand to allow more players to easily adapt to the mechanics. Kim believed that the chibi art style is too compressed and opted for life-size illustrations for battles with Live2D[7] "where the aesthetics of characters would be completely demonstrated."[4] The two companies hosted closed beta tests for the global version between the announcement and its release, allowing selected registrants to test the game mechanics. Contributing composers include Hiroyuki Sawano, who produced one of the game's theme song.[15] The game contains voice-overs in English, Japanese and Korean.[11]

Nikke was first revealed at the Crank in Showcase event in 2019, with several trade exhibitions being held ahead of its release, such as at G-Star[16] or Tokyo Game Show.[17] The game was initially planned for a worldwide release for Android and iOS in 2020,[2] but was rescheduled and released on November 4, 2022.[18] It surpassed three million pre-registrations ahead of its release.[19]
